History of Romsey allotments
Allotments have been on this site for
120 years. Starting in
1885 this land has been subject to a tenancy agreement with the
Broadlands Estate aiming to provide Romsey people with small working
areas to practise horticulture by growing vegetables and fruit.
The 9.25 acre site is divided into 165 allotments sized between 5 to 10 rods with a number of holders having long tenancy histories. The present Allotment Association was formed in 1942 to protect against house development on the site and Lord Mountbatten who gave his backing to these aims was elected President of the Association.
